Singapore Airlines Reveals Further Details on New Cabin Services
Singapore Airlines revealed further details of its new cabins and service offerings at London's World Travel Market show.
A new, 1,000-option version of SIA’s KrisWorld IFE service based on Panasonic eX2 hardware will include, for the first time on any airliner, a package of productivity applications hosted on the IFE system. Based on Sun Microsystems’ StarOffice Productivity Suite, it offers spreadsheet, presentation and word-processing capabilities and is described as being able to work with most common file formats.
Also offered are four learning applications, Berlitz Word Traveler, Health Notes, Executive Book Summaries and Culture Quest.
Passengers will be able to interact with the applications via the USB port fitted in every seat throughout the aircraft. Typically, a user could carry files aboard on a USB data stick, work on them with the aircraft system, and then download the results on to the data stick before disembarking.
Alternatively, laptop-users will be able to keep their work self-contained while using the in-seat power available in all classes to overcome battery duration limits. Power is supplied to every seat in the premium classes and to two out of every three in economy – a development that will be welcomed by the many business travellers who choose to fly as economically as they can.
Another eyecatching feature of the new economy class is the relocation of the handset/controller from the seat divider to a recess in the seatback, greatly improving access and eliminating the chances of inadvertent operation of things like the attendant-call button.
